I DIDN’T choose to be Malaysian. And, I suspect, neither did almost all of you. Unless I was singled out, I don’t think any of us were given a say in certain matters: Our place of birth, ethnic background, or our parents.

As an example, I didn’t choose to be born Chinese in ethnicity, male in sex, nor Klang Valley in location. So while there is a great list of accomplishments throughout Chinese civilisation, I cannot take credit for any of them. Nor should I take the blame for any wrong-doing by Chinese anywhere in the world. I can only be responsible for my own actions and choices. As for all the unfairness perpetuated by men against women, it wasn’t my fault. Really. Well, most of it isn’t, anyway.

We are all, ultimately, individuals. We might be affected by those around us, the environment in which we were raised, and the collective history of our racial, religious and other identities. But in the end, we are all defined by the choices we make, and not the answer we fill in a registration form.

Nationality, ethnicity and sex, I’ve always felt, are unusual attributes to take pride in. Especially considering I had no say in any of those things. If I did, I might have chosen to be Spanish because they take siestas in the middle of the day, something I often wish I could do.

Or I might have chosen to be a woman because so much of the world’s woes are caused by men with too much testosterone. I don’t think anyone should be embarrassed about who they are, of course. That’s silly. But it seems even sillier to take pride in something that you have absolutely zero contribution to.
Now, I understand the joy that most Malaysians are feeling ahead of the 31st. It is, after all, the 50th Merdeka. A nice round number, a milestone of half a century. It’s a significant occasion to commemorate and celebrate. But to say I am proud of the road to Merdeka, which happened more than 50 years ago, would be somewhat untrue.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I do have a tremendous amount of respect and gratitude for those who have fought and sacrificed to make this country a better place. All of them, including those who failed. They are all heroes in my book. But I cannot take credit for anything that happened before I was born. And neither can many Malaysians out there. Merdeka would have happened regardless of my existence. The past, after all, is what it is.

We do, however, have a say in what being Malaysian means today. My being Malaysian might not have been a conscious decision, but it is nevertheless a reality for me, as well as for the other Malaysians who have to deal with me.

Therefore, I have to stake a claim in the country’s affairs, not so much because of lofty ideas like pride and patriotism, but simply because it affects me. This is, for better or worse, my home. I have too much at stake to let everyone else have their way.

The meaning of being Malaysian is a perennial question that has no definitive answer. From time to time, we wonder about the definition of this country, hoping that it could be encapsulated in a one-page document. It might not be a nice thing to say considering the patriotic mood everywhere, but I don’t believe there’s too much that’s unique to Malaysia.

Durians? Thais, Singaporeans and Indonesians eat them, too. Our language? The Indonesians speak a form of it, as do southern Thais.

Our multiethnic makeup? Many cities in the developed world are far more multiethnic than we are. In many cases, they have progressed even further in this respect, with policies that are far more inclusive than ours.

Our Malaysian cuisine? Perhaps. But close variations of many of our dishes can be found in the kitchens of our neighbouring countries too.

The manner in which we practise Islam? It can be argued that Turkey, for all its political troubles of late, is also a good example of a Muslim-majority nation with a moderate outlook.

No. What is truly unique about Malaysia, I believe, is each and every one of us. The decisions we make as individuals, the ideas we pursue, the actions we take. For better or worse, that is what sets Malaysia apart from anywhere else in the world: The people who live here. Whatever our histories, we are all citizens of this nation today, inheritors of the result of many decisions made in the past, good and bad.

While still important to many Malaysians, the question of whose ancestors came here first or second is meaningless. It is not our past that defines us, but our present.

We can talk a lot about being proud of our heritage, of our history, or how the races came together to fight for independence. They are all valid sentiments. But they do not fully represent Malaysia as it is today.

My point, I suppose, is that I hope for more people to take pride in the way they lead their lives today instead of merely how others led theirs in the past. We might not have had a choice in being Malaysian, but we do have a choice in deciding what that means.

Beach - Indiana Dunes

After almost 6 months of cold, the ~~beach~~ dunes is always nice.
:)
Drove an hour and half just for a coupla hours of sun, sand and water.
We decided to go to a different place, and this places has like 7 different beaches. Picked one, but we had to wait for almost an hour to get into the parking lots. There goes an hour worth of fun. :(
This one had lifeguards. That explains why the tonnes of people.

Water is dirtier, but.. oh well. At least we got a nice spot to camp.
Hidden and shaded.

Since it is a lake, there ain't those sticky feeling that you'll get when you're by the sea.
It's so much nicer, but I still miss that yucky, sticky, dirty feeling.

Dinner at Michigan City.
Since it is a sunday, and almost 10pm, there's really nowhere to eat.
We found two miserable places. A bar. And a erm, steakhouse.

'Chang' - Dumpling

My first ever attempt on making a 'chang' (dumpling).
It literally took me half an hour to wrap/tie the first one.
Gosh.
Why does everything always looks so easy when it's someone else who's doing it.

This is the first!
It's pretty decent looking... Not too bad.
:)

Though it lacks all those yummy ingredients like.. errm.. Chestnuts, Salted Egg Yolks etc, it's still good.
Oh well, there's really no way for me to get them here anyways.

It really gets so so much easier once you get the hang of it.

'Puah Kiam Ti Chang' (Half sweet half salty dumpling!)

Since I don't have a pot big enough to steam all of them, and of course, being lazy to wait for it to cook, boiling it take much much lesser time. :)
But then, the taste comes out into the water.

Tiles from Sept. 11

After Sept. 11, people started putting tiles on this fence.
Wishes, and also families of lost ones would put up contact information etc.
It first started out as 'tiles on the fence'. But eventually more and more people leaving tiles, flowers, wishes, it now became a national monument, commemorating those who've lost their lives in the Sept. 11 event.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Those who've watched Forest Gump should know that Forrest owns a shrimping business, and names it Bubba Gump. It has mainly shrimp dishes, but also has other seafood as well.

I like how the places runs. Instead of having waiters stopping by asking "how's everything?" every other minute, or waiting for 15 minutes for a waiter to stop by when you need something.

"Run Forrest Run"
Means you don't need any service, and asking the waiter to run along.

"Stop Forrest Stop"
Meaning you needed service, and is signaling the waiter to stop by your table.

Of course. The food are good as well. With very decent prices.

The 'newspaper' used to wrap the "I'm Stuffed Shrimp" (I THINK that's what the dish is called) is specially printed with news related to Forrest.

Finally. Of the three years I've been here, this is the first year that CNY did not fall on a weekday. It kinda sucks coz usually this is the time of the year that we have exams. YAY! At last I get to somewhat celebrate CNY.

Erika's friend is going back to school, so we sent her back.
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
A very small town just by the border to Canada.
Since it's very up north, they get snow frequently. It's very comforting seeing so much snow and having such cold weather after such a long break. Remembering how I complained about being cheated of Fall when it first started snowing beginning of October. Now I miss snow.

They have very pretty skies. As you can see why.

Apart from that, there're lots of weird signs. It seems that they named their road according to how long it is. I've seen a sign 17-mile Road three times. I wonder does it lead to the same road?

Snow! Grrrrrr...

I'm not done with summer yet-lah. I want my summer backkkkkkkk! :( It's only beginning of October and it's already so cold and snowing. And and, I just realized that the cleaners destroyed my beloved jacket! Argh! Instead of dry cleaning it, they must have just wash it. All the stuffing inside the jacket shrinks and it's just a piece of cloth now. :(

Back home, the vending machines that I know only dispenses drinks. Mostly are drink that are in a can or box, and some hot beverages in a cup. Vending machines are usually found in places where it is kinda impossible to put someone there to sell stuff.

Snacks and food like buns and sandwiches are acceptable as vending machines are meant to provide a 'grab n go' kinda service.

I found this in the middle of a huge mall in Chicago.

Does it even bothers you to spend some time in a shop looking/buying a phone?

Or is it "Oh! I forgot my cell today." So off you go to a vending machine and et yourself one. Two days later, you left it in the office and off you go to a vending machine and get another one. Just like when you need some food/drinks/snacks and you realised there's no place for you to get one, and you're in a hurry, but it's a cellphone instead.

A very nice bar opened by the owners of a Thai restaurant in town.

It has a very nicely set up bar on one side and some sorta fusion restaurant on the other side.
At least there's something different other than pubs, pubs, and pubs.

There's actually a wax figure photographer taking pictures of the band (who are they again? I don't remember). We (and another group of people) actually waited there for a couple of minutes, thinking that it's some photographer wanted to take pictures of them and pass them as real people.
